If you are looking for a contraception clinic, Emerald Lakes Medical Clinic provides comprehensive contraception services to help you understand your options. Our experienced healthcare professionals can talk you through different contraceptive methods, explain what each involves, and provide guidance based on your individual needs.
What Contraception Options Are Available at Emerald Lakes Medical Clinic?
At Emerald Lakes Medical Clinic, our GPs can discuss a range of common contraception options including:
Contraceptive Pills
Contraceptive pills are daily tablets that work mainly by preventing ovulation. There are different types of contraceptive pills, and your GP can discuss the available options. Taking the pill consistently and as directed is important for it to work effectively.
Implanon
Implanon is a small rod, approximately the size of a matchstick, inserted just under the skin in the upper arm. It slowly releases the hormone etonogestrel, a type of progestogen, to prevent ovulation and provides contraception for up to three years. It is a longer-term option for those who do not want to manage contraception on a daily or monthly basis. The insertion procedure is performed in the clinic by a trained GP.
Emergency Contraception
Commonly known as the morning-after pill, emergency contraception can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. Emergency contraceptive pills work by stopping or delaying ovulation, and they are more effective the sooner they are taken after intercourse. If you believe you need emergency contraception, contact our clinic as soon as possible to discuss your options.
A note about the Mirena Intrauterine Device (IUD): The Mirena IUD is inserted into the uterus, where it releases the hormone levonorgestrel, thickening cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to reach an egg while thinning the uterus lining. It provides contraception for up to eight years. The Mirena IUD procedure is not performed at Emerald Lake Medical Clinic. If you are interested in a Mirena IUD, your GP can discuss this with you and arrange a referral.
How Does a GP Help You Choose the Right Option?
Our GP will consider several factors before recommending an option:
- Health history: Certain health conditions, including a history or risk of blood clots or certain types of migraine, may affect which contraceptive methods are suitable.
- Convenience preferences: Some people prefer a long-acting method such as Implanon or an IUD, while others lean towards a daily approach.
- Potential side effects: Hormonal contraceptives can affect people differently, and your GP can explain the possible side effects and what to look out for.
- Pregnancy plans: If you are planning a pregnancy in the near future, this may influence which contraceptive methods you consider, particularly when looking at reversible options.
Even if you already have a contraception method in mind, a consultation at our contraception clinic allows you to check with our GPs whether it is suitable for you and discuss other options where appropriate.
What Happens During a Contraception Consultation?
If this is your first time seeing a GP about contraception, you may be wondering what you will be asked during the appointment. Your consultation may include:
- A discussion about your health history and current health status
- An explanation of the contraception options relevant to your situation
- Time for you to ask questions about how each option works
- If appropriate, your GP can arrange a referral for IUD fitting.
After the discussion, your GP can help you decide which contraception method is appropriate based on your health, preferences and plans for pregnancy.
